About our founder

"Hine is the Māori term for woman, girls, and the female element. Te reo Māori is my first language, so it was important that I carry a Māori name that reflects who I am, and what the brand represents." – Founder Miria Flavell

Founded in Aotearoa, New Zealand in 2018, Hine Collection was born out of frustration. I was plus size at the time, when a health scare kicked me into my health and fitness journey. I wanted to move: to strengthen and honour my body, but I struggled to find activewear that I could fit.

It seemed crazy that despite a seemingly body positive world, quality activewear simply wasn't available to anyone past a certain size. It wasn't just a barrier to the right workout gear, it was a barrier to engaging in a healthy life. I realised that I wasn't alone in this challenge: women everywhere were struggling with it too.

I began in my garage with a single legging design, and a vision to equip and support every woman to move. As the product range grew, so did the Hine message, as women all over the world joined our movement for a healthier,
more inclusive world.

At Hine we believe in the power of every body. Through movement we find strength, inside and out. But so often there are barriers to movement: stale ideas around who can move, and how.

At Hine we're creating a future where everyone is served and celebrated. With size inclusive activewear that flatters all body types, and a community to support and empower, we're here to help all women become unstoppable.

Here's the truth: If we don't feel good in our workout gear, we're less likely to work out. Most brands use a single size for sampling, and grade up from there. But real bodies are more diverse in size and shape, making the chances of a good fit for everyone pretty rare.

At Hine we're committed to the fit. We design with not 1, but 4 different sample sizes, and fit test on multiple body types to get every detail just right. Serving 8XL – XXS, it's flattering, inclusive activewear that'll make everybody want to move.

Founded in Aotearoa, New Zealand, Hine [pronounced he-neh] is proudly Māori female owned. In our language, te reo Māori, the word ‘Hine’ speaks to women, girls, and the female element. This notion of mana wāhine (the unique power and essence of women) is embedded in our Māori world view, and embodies the very soul of our brand.

We live our values, and honour our heritage as we ignite and uphold the strength of all women – wherever they are in the world.
